Tourism

Tourism is one of the most developed sectors in Gori Municipality. However, there is more potential than is currently being exploited. Tourists are attracted by the cultural and historical heritage sites.

 

There are 330 cultural heritage, of which 53 are in the city. The number of tourists is growing every year in 2016-2019. In 2016 the number of visitors was 190 551 and in 2019 this number became  513 250. 

 

In 2020, the coronavirus pandemic affected the number of visitors, although from 2021 there has still been a tendency to increase.

 

 

 

 

Ancient Rock-hewn town  –  Uplistsikhe

Uplistsikhe was one of the oldest settlements and urban centers in the Caucasus. It is located in Shida Kartli, 10 km east of the city of Gori, on the left bank of the Mtkvari River. 

 

It contains various structures dating from the Early Iron Age to the Late Middle Ages and is notable for the unique combination of various styles of rock-cut cultures from Anatolia and Iran,

as well as the co-existence of pagan and Christian architecture.

The city has streets, squares, water and sewer systems, four gates, a secret tunnel that leads to the Mtkvari River, a fence, and so on. Today it is considered an open-air museum.

 

 

 

   Joseph Stalin’s memorial museum

The Museum of the Soviet Leader, Joseph Stalin, was established in Gori in 1937.  Today, this cultural monument ranks first among museums in Georgia in terms of the number of visitors.

Up to 60,000 exhibits are kept here. The museum complex includes the memorial house where Stalin was born.

The exhibition building and personal train carriage, on which he traveled to historical conferences in Tehran, Yalta, and Potsdam.

The museum also preserves Stalin's personal belongings.

 

 

Gori  Fortress

Historic fortress in Kartli, in the center of Gori, on a high rocky hill.

The fortress first appears in records from the 13th century, but archaeological evidence shows that the area had already been fortified in the final centuries BC.

 

 

 
Historical-Ethnographical Museum

 

 

   

The museum houses an archeological collection from excavations in Shida Kartli Region, and dating back from the 4th century BC till modern times.

The items range from jewelry, grave items, clothing, tools, household furniture, and dining ware.  The notable artifacts displayed here are diadems from the Bronze Age, wine jugs shaped like a deer, Georgian and Karabagh carpets and rugs, textiles and golden thread embroidery for religious clothes, etc.


All artifacts are neatly laid out, giving a fascinating picture of the lives of Georgians in the area of Gori over many millennia.

 

 

  Ateni Sioni  

 

 

The Ateni Sioni Church is an early 7th-century Georgian Orthodox church in the village of Ateni, some 10 km (6.2 mi) south of the city of Gori, Georgia.

It stands in the setting of Ateni Gorge in the Tana River valley known not only for its historical monuments but also for its picturesque landscapes and wine.

The name "Sioni" derives from Mount Zion at Jerusalem.

Ateni is the tetraconch church, typical for the period. Its frescoes are one of the best examples of Georgian painting.

 

 

 Tourist Potential of the Athenian Valley

 

Ateni Valley is 15km away from Gori. It has the greatest potential for extreme tourism development. The natural and climatic conditions here provide the opportunity to arrange summer and winter resorts.

Also, there are balneological water sources, which have special medicinal features.

Sports Tourism

 

 

Gori Municipality has the potential to develop sports tourism. Gori is the City of Sportsmen, many masters of sports were trained here, and have successfully continued their activity abroad till now.

 

3 Olympic  (1 freestyle wrestler, 2 judo) and 6 World Champions (3 freestyle wrestlers, 2 judo, 1 boxing) are from Gori.  

Rugby, football, basketball, and other kinds of sports are also well-developed (Gori’s rugby and football teams are the champions of the National League).

It is noteworthy that the municipality has the appropriate infrastructure for the development of these sports. There is a sports complex of international standards, which is ready to host international tournaments.

There is also UEFA Standard Category 3 football field and an international standard rugby field.

In order to develop sports tourism, on October 7-8 "Skhireli Cup 2023" international tournament will be held in Gori Sports Palace.

Athletes from dozens of countries will participate in the tournament.

Information about the sports event is already posted on the international wrestling platform.

Tourism Development

 

The program aims to develop and financially support the country's tourism and tourism-related services.

 

The Co-Financing Mechanism provides terms for the hotel industry, agro and eco-tourism industry, and tourism services.

*  Commercial Banks / Leasing Companies

Within the framework of the loan component, the Agency subsidizes the loan interest rate determined by the national refinancing rate minus 5%.

In the case of the leasing component, the Agency subsidizes the loan interest rate determined by the national refinancing rate minus 3%.

Within the framework of the loan, the Agency guarantees no more than 80% of the loan principal amount for a maximum period of 10 years.

The minimum loan/leasing project amount is 50,000 GEL, and the maximum is 10,000,000 GEL.

At least 50% of the loan should be used for capital expenses and not more than 50% for working/operational capital.

 

* Program Conditions

The beneficiary of the program must be an entrepreneur who meets the 3rd or 4th  category enterprise criteria (only in its income component) - by the Law of Georgia on Accounting, Reporting, and Auditing, this can be checked through the link: www.reportal.ge

The first Loan/Leasing tranche should be adopted within six months after the approval of the Loan/Leasing subject by the Agency.

The Full disbursement of the loan should be adopted within two years after its approval by the Agency.

 

Within the framework of the EU Pilot Regions Program,  for applications confirmed by the Agency in 2022 - In case of a loan ranging from GEL 50 000 to GEL 1 500 000 beneficiaries from the pilot regions will receive a grant from 10% to 20% (For further information please visit Grant page).
